Happy Transgender History Month!

It was during this month, August of 1966, that the infamous Compton's Cafeteria Riot occurred in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. This marked the beginning of organized transgender activism in San Fransisco, almost 3 full years before the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

The riots of the late 1960s and early 1970s should remind us all of pride’s roots: a protest and mutual aid movement, led BY AND FOR queer, gender non-conforming, working class, black and brown homeless sex workers. Through organizations like Vanguard, Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, ACT UP, and many more,
